(My Journey with Severe Osteoporosis & What I Wish More Women Knew)

I Never Thought My Bones Would Crumble… But They Did
I never thought I’d be the woman whose bones were crumbling. But in 2011, one moment changed everything.
I was doing a simple stretch—legs overhead, knees dropping toward my ears—when I felt a clunk in my mid-back. A sharp, unexpected pain shot through me, and I struggled to get up. I brushed it off at first, thinking I had just tweaked something. But the pain didn’t go away.
Over the next few weeks, I did what most people would do—I saw a chiropractor, took anti-inflammatories, and tried to push through the discomfort. But by September, things took a turn for the worse. A rough ambulance ride (I was an EMT at the time) aggravated my back, leaving me in even more pain.
By January 2012, I reached for a simple container, felt a searing pain in my back, and couldn’t stand up. That moment sent me down a path that I never expected—one filled with fear, frustration, and ultimately, healing.

The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
I went through x-rays, blood tests, and a bone density scan, only to hear the words that no woman wants to hear:
📢 “You have severe osteoporosis.”
Not just mild bone thinning, but severe loss—with damage to seven vertebrae and a height loss of over 2.5 inches. My lower back was literally crumbling, and suddenly, everyday life became a challenge.
Doctors told me I needed strong medications to prevent further fractures. Surgery (kyphoplasty) was an option. A back brace was discussed. The weight of it all felt overwhelming.
But here’s the part no one talks about: I didn’t just want to stop the damage—I wanted to heal, rebuild, and live fully again.
That’s when I started digging deeper into what truly affects bone health—and what I found changed everything.

The Missing Pieces No One Talks About
Most people think osteoporosis is just about calcium and vitamin D. While those are important, they’re only part of the puzzle.
Here’s what I discovered about what really impacts bone density:
✅ The Gut-Bone Connection – Poor gut health can lead to poor nutrient absorption, meaning your bones don’t get the support they need.
✅ Chronic Inflammation & Sugar Cravings – Inflammation weakens bones, and high sugar intake can deplete key minerals needed for bone strength.
✅ Hormonal Balance Matters – Estrogen, thyroid function, and adrenal health all play a major role in maintaining strong bones.
✅ It’s NOT Just About More Calcium – Magnesium, Vitamin K2, Strontium, and bioavailable nutrients are crucial.
I had spent years focusing on everything except these key factors. Once I shifted my focus, my healing journey truly began.

How I Rebuilt My Bone Strength (Without Surgery)
Over the next several years, I made targeted changes to support my bone health naturally. Here’s what made the biggest difference:
💪 Healing from the Inside Out:
• Focused on gut health first (supporting microbiome balance and nutrient absorption).
• Reduced inflammation triggers (processed foods, sugar, and stress).
🥗 Targeted Nutrition for Bone Density:
• Increased Vitamin D, K2, Strontium, Magnesium and Omega-3s (beyond just calcium).
• Balanced blood sugar to prevent bone-depleting insulin spikes.
• Began Plexus supplements in 2017, focusing on gut health, inflammation reduction, and overall well-being, so many things that had been missing in what I thought was a comprehensive plan.
🏋️♀️ Strength & Movement:
• When I asked my doctor about rebuilding strength, he advised that daily activity was sufficient, but I had become so weak I could not even do a squat.
• I found a friend who would work with me to rebuild core strength, and I worked diligently to regain function and mobility.
• I also incorporated a vibration plate into my routine, which helped stimulate my bones and improve circulation. This low-impact method provided additional support in maintaining bone strength without putting stress on fragile areas.
🩺 Medical & Naturopathic Support:
• Initially while I waited for the medical system I followed a supplement program designed by a Naturopath.
• When I finally saw a Specialist I was started on a regime of daily parathyroid hormone injections (which significantly improved bone density in 6 months).
• Within a year I transitioned to Prolia injections every 6 months while maintaining my holistic health regimen.
• Worked with both medical and naturopathic doctors to create a full-body approach.
Fast forward to today? My bones are now stable, I feel stronger than I did in my 50s, and I’m back to fully living my life.

What I Want Every Woman to Know About Osteoporosis
Too often, women are told:
💊 “Just take more calcium.”
💊 “It’s genetic—there’s nothing you can do.”
💊 “You’ll just have to be careful from now on.”
But that’s not the whole truth. Your bones are constantly rebuilding, and you have more power than you think to strengthen them.
